What If Alexa Could Actually Work With HomeSeer?
Not just announcements. Not just routines. The goal now is two-way interaction, context-aware notifications, and eventually an AI-driven layer that can turn Alexa into a real HomeSeer interface.
Alexa Integration for HomeSeer: Where It Is Now, and Where I’m Taking It
What started out primarily as a way to have HomeSeer make announcements through Alexa devices has grown quite a bit beyond that.
At this point, calling it simply a "Voice Announce" plugin is probably underselling it, so I thought I’d post an update on what it can currently do and where I’m looking to take it next.
What it does today
The plugin can discover and work with the Alexa devices associated with your Amazon account and currently supports:
- Spoken messages through individual Alexa devices
- Alexa announcements
- Volume control
- Do Not Disturb control
- Timers and related Alexa device functions
- Alexa routine discovery
- Running Alexa routines directly from HomeSeer
- Sending text commands to Alexa, effectively allowing HomeSeer to issue many of the same commands you could speak
- Music playback through the usual Alexa-supported providers
- Media state and playback information
- Last-used Alexa/device interaction information
- Alexa voice interaction context and events
- Device-specific Alexa state/sensor information where available
There’s also a companion Alexa skill I’ve been working with that extends media playback beyond the normal Alexa services.
If installed, it can provide access to your own:
- Plex
- Emby
- Jellyfin
libraries for playback through compatible Amazon devices.
That opens up some fun possibilities beyond just "play music," particularly since I also have HomeSeer integrations for those media platforms.
Where I’m heading next
The next step I’m exploring is less about exposing more individual Alexa API functions and more about making Alexa genuinely useful as part of HomeSeer automation.
One idea I’m particularly interested in is a smarter notification system.
Instead of an event simply saying:
"Speak this message on the Kitchen Echo"
you could define the message as informational, warning, critical, etc., and let the plugin handle things such as:
- Selecting the most appropriate Alexa device
- Using the most recently active Alexa
- Temporarily adjusting announcement volume
- Pausing or ducking currently playing media
- Playing an alert/chime before the message
- Restoring volume and media afterward
- Escalating an unanswered critical notification to additional Alexa devices
That starts turning the Alexa devices into more of a whole-house notification system rather than simply a collection of speakers.
Two-way interaction
The area I’m investigating most closely right now is allowing HomeSeer to ask a question and receive the spoken response back through Alexa.
For example:
"The garage door has been open for 20 minutes. Would you like me to close it?"
You answer:
"Yes."
And HomeSeer closes it.
Or:
"The UPS is running on battery. Would you like me to shut down the media servers?"
"Remind me in ten minutes."
That could potentially support simple Yes/No questions, choices, acknowledgements, delayed reminders, and eventually more natural responses.
The idea would be to associate the reply with the Alexa device that asked the question and with the specific pending HomeSeer interaction, including a timeout so an old response could never accidentally trigger an action later.
And possibly AI...
This also overlaps considerably with something else I’ve been contemplating: an AI-oriented HomeSeer plugin.
I don’t mean simply putting a chatbot into HomeSeer.
I’m more interested in using AI as a decision and interaction layer.
HomeSeer already knows an enormous amount about what is happening in the house. An AI layer could potentially combine that context and decide when something is worth bringing to your attention, phrase the question naturally, understand a less structured response, and then hand the resulting action back to HomeSeer.
In that model:
HomeSeer provides the devices, events and automation.
The AI provides context and interpretation.
Alexa provides the ears and voice.
Importantly, none of that would be required. Normal deterministic HomeSeer events and Alexa functions would continue to operate without AI. It would simply be another layer available for people who wanted it.
Still exploring...
There are quite a few directions this could go, and at this stage I’m deliberately experimenting before deciding exactly where the boundaries should be.
My preference is to avoid simply adding features because Amazon exposes them. I’d rather concentrate on capabilities that actually make Alexa more useful as part of a HomeSeer installation.
