Curiosity first. Categories later.

I’ve never been especially good at staying inside one technical lane, which is probably why so many of my interests keep colliding with one another.

My fascination with technology started with electronics: building projects, repairing televisions, stereos, and other equipment, and learning by opening things up and figuring out what was actually happening inside.

Personal computers added another dimension. The Apple II family was my first deep dive into assembly language, and it was glorious: memory maps, registers, timing, hardware access, and code all became one system. Later came x86 assembly and a broader interest in low-level software and computer architecture.

That curiosity expanded rather than narrowing. I worked around a wide variety of computer hardware, did professional electronics repair, and eventually built a career spanning information technology, networking, servers, software development, databases, security, communications, web systems, automation, and systems integration.

I also never stopped working with the physical world. I continue to do home renovation and construction, electrical and plumbing work, practical engineering, mechanical projects, appliance repair, and automotive work, including several frame-up restorations.

And I remain an audiophile and videophile, which means there is always another signal path, receiver, display, transport, codec, speaker, control protocol, or piece of vintage gear waiting to be understood.

Modern maker platforms such as Raspberry Pi and other single-board computers fit naturally into all of this. They sit right at the boundary between software and hardware, which is one of my favorite places to work.
